Ancestry DNA Results

Hi! A while back, the lovely Shannon (from Kittyp0p) shared a post about her results from doing the Ancestry DNA Test. I’ve always thought those things were kind of cool, and I had money saved up, so I thought, why not splurge and have a go myself? So that’s what I did.

My parents with a brand new me back in 1991

I received my little pack back in June, sent it off, and got email updates on how it was all going. Finally, last Friday, I got an email saying my results were in! I was hoping to see my results pointing off in two random directions, since my parents are different ethnicities. So, drum roll please, here are my results:

ancestry results 02

Seems about right. My dad is NZ/European, and my mum is from the Philippines. The extra groups are pretty fascinating though. I’m not sure how those ones pop up. I have no idea how they work all this out from the saliva I send anyway. But it’s still fun to read through!

ancestry results 01

So once you click in, you see this big world map, where they’ve helpfully highlighted all the ethnicity estimates. When you click on each section, it gives you more information about that region’s history. Then they have a section on genetic diversity, which shows the percentage of a typical native’s DNA in that area, and compares it to mine. They don’t have that big of a collection of people to test it against, so I don’t think it’s too accurate, but it’s interesting.

ancestry results 03

ancestry results 04

Getting back to the list of percentages I’ve been linked to, I wasn’t sure why Polynesian was there. But I clicked on it, and it has ties to both Philippines and New Zealand, so I can see why it popped up. The link to Ireland/Scotland/Wales and Great Britain are also not too surprising. A lot of Europeans migrated to New Zealand in the 1800s. I’m sure I have some far off links there.

Finally, it has some ‘low confidence regions’. These are the ones where the percentage is 2% or less. The regions listed there were Scandinavia, Finland/Northwest Russia, Asia South, Iberian Peninsula and Asia Central. So, I don’t know what to make of that. Again, it’s all mainly Europe or Asia.

All in all, this made for a fun afternoon of looking through the results and linking it to regions around the world. I didn’t find anything too surprising, the results were what I pretty much expected. If you’re interested in this kind of thing, and you’re able to buy the test without making yourself broke, then I say go for it! It’s fun. If not, then it’s probably best to just leave it.

Have you guys done a DNA test like this before? How’d it go for you?

10 x 10 Outfit Challenge Completed! (Winter Edition)

So I’ll be upfront with you guys. I didn’t take these photos on the day I wore the outfits. Why? Because before and after work, it’s pitch black. So instead, I took notes on what I wore each day (and pre-planned a few days ahead) and just took all the photos this past weekend.

Anyway, if you haven’t read this post first, I suggest you do as it explains this challenge! As a refresher, here’s my 10 items.

Here are the 10 outfits I came up with!

Outfit #1

Outfit 01

I’ve been loving my overalls again! It’s so comfy and even more perfect for winter. I often wear this outfit nowadays.

Outfit #2

Outfit 02

This outfit embodies my love of layers. The hoodie is an added bonus as random rain happens often at the moment.

Outfit #3

Outfit 03

Good old tights. They allow me to still wear my skirts in winter.

Outfit #4

Outfit 04

I really love wearing this big heavy cardigan, it makes any outfit so much more warmer.

Outfit #5

Outfit 05

Wearing a pompom beanie is great when your hair isn’t behaving. I really like this outfit, it felt a bit more dressy than my normal outfits.

Outfit #6

Outfit 06

I had to bring back the overalls, but to make it different, I swapped out the sweater underneath.

Outfit #7

Outfit 07

Another favourite outfit of mine. Comfy and perfect for spending all day chasing babies.

Outfit #8

Outfit 08

My last overalls outfit for the challenge! It was a bit cooler, so I chucked on my big cardigan to make it a little different.

Outfit #9

Outfit 09

Could you tell how windy it was? This was similar to outfit 7, so I wore my boots this time round.

Outfit #10

Outfit 10

Ending the photos on the same pose as in outfit #1!

I’m pretty happy with the outfits I came up with. I don’t think I wore the same one twice, even if a few are quite similar. Since the items I picked were all similarly coloured, I was able to mix and match really easily! It made for a fun 10 days, and honestly, I’ll probably wear these outfits again as winter continues.

Let me know which outfit you liked the best!

Meet Shadow

As you guys know, we recently adopted a cat. Her name is Shadow.

Shadow

We met her at a rescue shelter a few weeks back. She’s around 1 and a half. She was very shy from the beginning, and wouldn’t come out and socialize, even with the other cats. She was very sweet when we came to her though, and gave her lots of pats and love.

Shadow 01

We’ve had her for around a week now, and things are going well! At first, she pretty much hid and kept to herself. We gave her food, water and space for a lot of the first weekend. We started to just hang out near her, and slowly encouraged her to come over. Since those first little interactions, she’s really starting to come out of her shell!

shadow 04

Once you start petting her, she doesn’t let you stop! She often headbutts our hand if it’s just sitting there. I’ve noticed she loves it when we pet her behind her ears. Another thing she gets excited about is food (as we all do really). She stands up high and runs around us when she sees us coming with her food. She prefers the little cat biscuits. She’s also started eating treats from our hand.

shadow 03

We’re learning more about our new furry friend as we go along. One thing that we’ve recently discovered is that she is a night owl. She likes to find a spot to chill in all day, then at around 8pm she starts getting really active. It’s normally when we play together. We got her a scratch post which has these balls hanging off which she loves whacking. She also loves this little fur mouse toy. She likes to scratch and bite it, as well as just ripping it apart and throwing it around the room.

shadow 02

So yeah, that’s Shadow the cat. She is definitely starting to feel more at home here. We’re happy that she’s comfortable enough to come to us and hang out more often. Her favourite spot changes a bit, but for the last few days, it’s been under the bed. Her other favourite spot is in the closet, and on the windowsill when the curtains are pulled. She just loves her hidey holes.

Any stories you guys have of cats or pets in general? Feel free to share!

If I Could Only Keep One – Makeup Tag

So I haven’t been doing tags lately, especially since now I’ve gone down to three posts a week, I’m keen to write about other things. That being said, Cleia recently tagged me for this makeup tag! It reminds me of the Ride or Die tag from a while back, and it’s fun to think about which makeup product I would limit myself to “if I could only keep one”.

The gist is, you look in your collection, and if you have more than one type of product, you need to decide which one you’d keep. I won’t be including eyebrow products, concealer, blush, primers or setting sprays in this list, cause I only have one of each of those at the moment.

Okay, here we go.

Eyeshadow Palette

Tarte Treasure Box

Okay, so this is cheating a little, since this comes with more than just eyeshadow. But I really do love this palette. I have two Colourpop ones which I’m pretty keen on, but lately, I’ve been coming back to the Tarte one. It has a bigger range, more colours, and it’s pretty high quality, so I can’t see myself separating from it.

Mascara

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

I’ve used a fair few mascaras up, but I keep coming back to this one. It can cause pretty intense lashes from just one application, so it’s well worth it.

Eyeliner

Tarte Double Liner

I keep getting more eyeliners for whatever reason. I do love playing with them, even if I can’t go beyond a basic one (winged liners remain a fantasy). This one from Tarte comes with both a liquid and pencil liner. Both work great, so this seems to be the obvious pick for me!

Lipstick

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London

Okay, so my lipstick collection has grown quite a bit. I mostly have liquid lipsticks. That being said, I like my neutral one from NYX the best still. It goes with any look! While I love a lot of my other ones, this is a staple for me, so it has to stay.

Foundation

Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick

I still really like Bare Minerals, but I’ve found myself reaching for my Hourglass foundation stick more recently. I can apply it quite quickly in the morning, it has amazing coverage, and I also use less foundation. I went through my previous foundation in around 2 months. But I’ve been using this one for over 2 weeks, and I’ve barely made a dent in it!

Bronzer

Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer

I don’t really have that much bronzers, but this one has become my go-to. It smells like coconuts, and the texture is so smooth and buttery! I’ve been using it as a transition eyeshadow quite a lot too.

Highlighter

Becca Shimmering Skin Pressed Perfector Opal

I also don’t have too many highlighters, the ones I do have were when I really got into trying lots of different ones. That being said, this one really is the most incredible. The amount of sheen you get from just one teeny stroke is so beautiful! I just like looking at it.

That’s all for this post! If you guys had to pick just one of these types of products, which would you go with? Feel free to do this tag yourself!

If We Were Having Coffee (July Edition)

Another month, another update post. So sit down with some coffee, or whichever drink you prefer and let’s catch up!

If we were having coffee, I would talk about how we now have a new car. Our previous car was a little blue Nissan March, and it seems to be on it’s last legs. It’s got a few quirks which are more annoying now, so it’s time to upgrade. Still, Rory got it back in 2012, so it’s lasted us a nice while. So now we have a black Toyota Corolla. I just now need to get used to driving this one, cause it took me a long time to adjust to the previous one haha.

If we were having coffee, I would talk about the lovely Shadow. Our shy black cat. We got her home last week, and set up her own space in our office/spare room. Each time we come in, she has found a new place to catloaf herself into. She really loves little hideyholes. The first few days she seemed to be a bit confused as to what was happening, but she’s been warming up to us. We play with her each evening after work, and there’s definitely a bond forming which is nice. I’ll probably devote a post to her at some point, cause she’s amazing.

Shadow

If we were having coffee, I would stress that I am over winter. Sure it has some perks, but the commuting in darkness, and constant barrage of blocked noses and coughs are wearing me down. Literally. I don’t know what’s up with my immune system this winter, but I keep catching them all, and it’s hard not to feel sorry for myself all the time. So, I’m patiently waiting for August to come and go, so I can head into spring!

If we were having coffee, I’d ask what’s going on with you guys lately?

Bath Bombs Galore #2

I did a post on this back in November, but since then I’ve tried more bath bombs, so I thought it was time for a part 2!

Avobath

This has still been one of my most favourite bath bombs. Ingredients include lemongrass, bergamot oils, avocado and olive oil. All of this left my skin feeling so nice and soft. The water turned into this really pretty, shimmery blue-green kind of colour too, and it smelt so nice! All in all, while it wasn’t flashy, it definitely left my skin feeling hydrated and nourished, and that’s all I need.

Sunnyside

This one is very golden and shimmery, and also kind of a pain to clean up afterwards. Sunnyside is a bubble bath bomb, so along with making the water golden and sparkly, it also filled up with lots of bubbles! The scent was very citrus-y, which is no surprise as the ingredients are a blend of orange, lemon and tangerine oils. All in all, it was quite refreshing, but I don’t think I’d try it again.

Sex Bomb

This was highly recommended to me in the store, and I was keen to try it out. It smelt floral, but not overpowering. When I hopped in, I immediately felt more relaxed. The ingredients include jasmine (helps with stress and anxiety) ylang ylang (helps sooth worries) and clary sage (helps to clear the mind). The water was a pretty pink/purple colour, and made my skin nice and soft. Also, as a little surprise, that mini rose at the top of the bomb stays for a while. It was just floating around like a little boat, before finally dissolving around 15 minutes later. It’s definitely one to try for yourself!

Experimenter

experimenter 01

This is one of the more pricier ones. Like Intergalactic, it’s cause you’re going to get a show as you drop the bomb in. There was lots of colours swirling, as well as different scents. I got a bit of vanilla, and something else I couldn’t quite place. As the water settled, the colours all mixed, so the water was a bit murky. The appeal is definitely in the beginning stages of this bath bomb, but I still enjoyed it.

Creamy Candy

creamy candy

This was the first bubble bar I’ve tried, and I really liked it! The water turned into a nice light pink, and it felt so moisturizing on my skin. I came out with very smooth and velvety skin which I really enjoyed. The scent was also sweet, kind of like candy which is never a bad thing. The ingredients include almond oil and cocoa butter while helped with the overall hydration and softening experience! Definitely give it a go some time.

Marmalade

marmalade 01

This is the first jelly bomb I’ve tried, and I didn’t really understand what made it different from a bath bomb at first. From what I can tell, rather than fully dissolving, there are little bits of jelly covering the water which you can squish in your hands during the bath. It was very satisfying feeling it dissolve in my hands. The ingredients include orange and grapefruit oils, so it had a nice citrus scent and colour. All in all, it was very refreshing and a lot of fun!

Over and Over

over and over 01

This is another bath bomb that is fun to watch as you throw it in. It rolls over and over, releasing lots of pinks, oranges and golds everywhere! It was definitely refreshing, and the cocoa butter left my skin feeling nice and soft. My one issue with it though, is that it did stain my tub more than other bombs. I had to spend some time getting the colours off the side.

The Big Sleep

big sleep 01

This was one that Rory got me as a treat, after I’d had a bad day at work. I was drained and grumpy, so this was a really nice surprise! I immediately got scents of lavender and chamomile, which definitely helped me relax. When I popped it in, it turned the water into a nice light blue colour. While in the tub, the mix of lavender and neroli oil helped me feel so relaxed. Which was a good bonus, as I was in a crabby mood right before the bath. I was so relaxed in the bath that I caught myself almost falling asleep way too many times to count. After getting out, I headed straight to bed and had such a good sleep! I really recommend trying this if you’re in need of a relaxing night in!!

So I’ve tried a lot of bath bombs in the past 6-8 months, and I definitely plan on getting more! Which bath bombs have you tried recently?

10 x 10 Outfit Challenge (Winter Edition)

I loved doing this challenge back in summer, so I thought it would be fun to bring back for winter. As before, credit for this challenge goes to the lovely Style Bee. The rules of the challenge are pretty simple, come up with 10 items that you can mix and match into 10 outfits over 10 days.

Winter is a time for all the layers, so I feel like I can do quite a lot of combinations and come up with 10 different outfits. I noticed that I have a neutral colour scheme in most of my clothes though. For this round, I chose three tops, two bottoms, two outer layers, and two shoes.

Here’s what I landed on.

  • Grey school sweater
  • Blue zipper sweater
  • Light grey baggy jumper
  • Blue hoodie
  • Blue skinny jeans
  • Blue mini skirt
  • Black overalls
  • Black woolly cardigan
  • Light brown combat boots
  • Dark grey boot wedges

I’m pretty happy with my choices. I can layer quite a few of them, and I feel like they’re pretty versatile. The only problem with taking photos of the outfits are that it’s always dark when I’m home now (yay for winter hours!). I might try take selfies, then take full outfit photos during the weekend. I’ll work something out.

Have you guys tried this outfit challenge before?

Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick Review

I don’t normally do beauty review posts, but I thought it would be fun to try doing one. I recently splurged on buying the Hourglass Vanish Seamless Foundation Stick, and decided to share my thoughts.

hourglass

I’d had my eye on this for a while. I had heard about it from Marzia, and general positive reviews from around  the internet. As with any beauty product, just because it works for someone else, doesn’t mean it’ll work well for you. But I’ve had a good run with products recommended by Marzia, so I decided to at least try it out. In store, I got matched to my shade (Ivory), and the lovely worker even agreed to fully apply it so I could see what I thought. I really liked it! So since I had saved up already, I decided to get it!

hourglass 02

I’ve never used a foundation stick before, but this one was really great to use. It goes on really smooth and fluidly. The foundation’s formula is very concentrated, so you don’t need to use that much. Even though it’s quite concentrated, it feels very light on my face.

hourglass 03

I apply a few dots all over my face and use a beauty blender to spread out the coverage. I used my Real Techniques expert face brush for a bit, but I find that a blender is easier to work with. I also apply more where I want to conceal, such as under my eyes. The foundation looks and feels quite natural, while still offering a lot of coverage. It has a kind of dewy finish, and lasts really well throughout the day.

hourglass 04

All in all, I’m really happy I splurged and got this! It’s definitely high-end, but to me it was worth it. I hear a lot of praise for this foundation, but some people do have issues. It has been suggested to me to apply an oil before this foundation, to help smooth it out more, but I haven’t had any issues. If you’re able to splurge on this, I say go for it. If not, there’s heaps of amazing dupes out there too!

Have you guys every tried this foundation?

Recreating Bloggers Instagram Photos #2

If you want to know what this is all about, then check out the first part! During my absence on the internet the past week, I realized that what I missed the most was all my blogging friends. I missed reading your posts, commenting on what’s going on, and just interacting with you guys basically.

This ramble led me to wanting to do a second part of this series. Recreating bloggers instagram photos! This time, I focused on detail photos. They’re a lot of fun to do and I love seeing the creativity everyone has with them. That being said, here’s my recreations!

Siyana Online

siyana online insta

I’ve been following Siyana since forever, both on her blog and Instagram. Her feed is so beautiful to look at, from all the places she’s been lucky enough to visit, to detail pictures like this. I saw her Feline Fine shirt, and remembered that I recently bought a kitty inspired shirt of my own.

recreation 01

All my three objects are different colours, but I think it still works. The main thing that I realized when getting the bits ready for  this photo is that I don’t have a traditional lipstick. I mostly have liquid lipsticks. This Clinique Pop lipstick is the only one I have lol.

Vintage Tea Rose

vintagetearose insta

Sarah has been a blogging bestie for ages now. If you read this Sarah, you were one of the ones who I was feeling nosy about during my week of absence. Anyway, I was scrolling through her feed when I came across this photo. I love mugs and all the things they can say. That being said, I would love to be in a hot tub right now, it’s freezing.

recreation 02

I had to swap the hands around for this photo as I can use my right hand better. My nails weren’t painted pretty, but they’re neat so that’s good. Look how grey it is outside. Ugh. I’m over winter. But anyway, I love how this photo looks!

Ugh Mango

ughmango insta

Jasmin has an amazing eye for details! All her photos on her feed are just stunning, whether it’s details, food or outfit, it’s always so aesthetically pleasing. I liked this one with the minimalistic colours, just black and gold. I wasn’t sure if I could recreate this exactly, but I wanted to try!

recreation 03

So I apparently don’t own a purse. I do have a long brown wallet, but I liked the look better with black. I’m using my kindle lol. Also, I don’t own a white sheet of any kind. Anyways, I feel like I caught the spirit of the photo fairly close, maybe just off the mark a little.

I had a lot of fun putting these together as always.
