Things I’ve Learned From Owning a Cat

Rory and I have been proud cat parents for almost a month now. As someone who has never really had a pet, I feel like I’ve learnt some things. Obviously, each cat is different, so a lot of these will relate to just Shadow, while a few may be universal to those of us with feline friends.

You will accidentally walk into them

This has happened on many occasions now and I always feel so bad about it. Often, while Shadow is running around me (most often when we’re about to feed her), I’ll walk into her. I’m normally moving slow, and it doesn’t seem to bother her, but I always have to apologise to her for a few minutes before moving on.

Food comes first

Cats love their food. Or at least, Shadow really does. She was a bit funny with it at first. There were one or two days where she ate really little, then a lot. She’s gotten consistent now, and we’re making sure we’re giving her the correct amount. We feed her in the morning and in the evening. When she knows that we’re about to feed her, she gets really excited. Lots of meows, jumping around us, walking through our legs, and general excitement.

The best time to play is in the dead of night

This may be more specific to Shadow, but she is a night owl. She has started coming out more during the day to hang, but she gets most active at night. We often hear her playing with her toys at around 2 am. Jumping around, chasing and attacking her toys. Her latest favourite game is trying to catch our legs and hands under the blankets on the bed.Β  It’s fun when we’re all awake, but slightly alarming when she decides to do it while we’re asleep.

Noisy toys are the best

When we first got Shadow, we got a small selection of toys. Her favourite became the tiny fur mouse that had a rattle inside. Then we got her a scratch post with balls (which rattle) on it. She loved both. Her favourite one at the moment is a ring, with a ball inside. The ball has as bell, so it makes noise as it rolls around. She loves to stick her paw, and soemtimes face in the many holes to try get it. She gets really into this, and the toy often ends up flying across the floor.

You’ll fall in love with them

Shadow is so very sweet and cute. I keep saying it, but she really is. Both Rory and I have a combo of pet names for her, and we love spending time with her. Whether we’re petting her, hanging out, or just watching her play, it feels nice to have her with us.

So yeah, that’s just some random things I’ve picked up from having Shadow live with us this past month. Anyone else have cats, or ever other pets? What’s something you’ve learned from having them in your house?

Angela.

  1. Shadow sounds a lot like my CiCi! CiCi loves feet and I never had a pet before her so I wasn’t used to a small, furry thing being near my feet so I used to step on her a lot at first. πŸ˜– she’s fine, though! and CiCi also gets huge bursts of energy around 11pm, and she used to wake me up every day at 5:45am on the dot, it was so weird lol! she’s such a finicky little lady but I love her! cats are awesome pets, glad you’ve got one in your life now! 😸β™₯️

    1. Thank you! Haha, I’m glad to know it’s not just me! It happens most often when we’re about to feed her. She knows what’s going to happen so she gets even closer and walks around our legs heaps πŸ˜‚

      1. Stuey does exactly the same! The amount of times that I’ve almost fallen over is ridiculous! :’)

  3. I had a cat for 12 years. She was a weird one, sweet but also spunky. She had a clear personality as most cats do. I can relate to everything on your list! Something I might add is that as she got older she acted more like an old lady. I would always pick her up and take her to my room but she would get bored of me after a couple minutes. She’d always come around for dinner though, so the time together was nice.

    1. Haha, I can see Shadow getting like that as she gets older! I’m glad you can relate to the post! We’ve had Shadow for just a month, but we hope to have her for a really long time too πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you! Haha, that’s so cute and random! I always get surprised when Shadow gives little love bites for no reason. I’m sorry for your loss! That can’t have been easy 😦

  4. That last one is why I’m not worried at all that my boyfriend β€œisn’t a cat person” and I know he’ll change his tune when we get a house and bring my cats home (:

  5. My goodness, Shadow is so completely adorable!! Zelda is exactly the same way with her food. Food is basically everything to her, haha! We leave it down all day for her to munch on (and she gets mad if we don’t, showing us by constantly opening the cupboard holding her food container). Still, we usually fill up the bowl before bed and if she can see the bottom of the bowl, she will start crying and yelling at us in utter panic even though there will still be plenty of food pieces left. It’s the funniest thing! I’ve heard that night owl cats is pretty common! They are nocturnal creatures and apparently that’s the best time to play as crazy as possible, haha. I love your posts about Shadow! Cats are wonderful pets. πŸ™‚

    1. Haha, I can see Shadow doing that to us down the line. She knows where her food is in the pantry so she’s always going right up It it and staring at us even after we’ve fed her πŸ˜‚
      Cats really are awesome πŸ˜„

  6. Awww cute post! Like shadow, my cat prioritises food too! Except he’s not fussed by toys at all, even though I still buy them every now and then to see if I can tempt him. It’s almost impossible to play properly with him though because he doesn’t understand that it hurts when he bites people with his razor sharp teeth, nor does he understand that he should be retracting his claws! Ouchy πŸ™‚

    1. Haha, she just loves noisy toys! We’ve thought about getting a laser pen, but we also think it mostly just annoys them. We’re happy for her to have her go crazy at night. We just close thw bedroom door now and it quietens all the racket πŸ˜‚

  8. Aw Shadow sounds fun to hang with. I love it that she loves to play with your arms and legs. Pets are like babies really! I miss having a dog. Someday when we have a house of our own. Meanwhile, I shall continue to live vicariously through others πŸ™‚ xx

  9. What a sweet post! Haha I think the walking into pets is normal. I don’t have any but I walk into all of them that I’ve met from friends and family because I’m not used to pets being there and always apologize a ton too.

  10. I have always wanted a black cat named Shadow or Midnight so I am jealous, also adorable kitty too. I lost my cat about a year ago, and I think the last point you make about falling in love with them is important, I remember my dad cried for weeks when we lost our cat, he truly did love her it’s like having a built in child, pet, friend, etc. Cats and pets do a lot. Congratulations on becoming pet owners hoping to become one myself soon.
