Favourite Rom-Coms

Favourite Rom-Coms

Jamie recently shared her list of top five romantic comedies in celebration of Valentine’s Day being upcoming. So, I wanted to do the same, here we go!

I feel like I should mention that these are also in no particular order of how much I like them. I do really like all of these and have watched them multiple times.

1) His Girl Friday

Image result for his girl friday

I feel like I’ve talked about this before, but I really do love this film. When I told Rory I was going to do a post about my favourite rom-com’s, he immediately brought up this one. He knows I love it, and I do. Set in the 1940’s, the general plot is that Hilda has just gotten engaged and plans to leave her job as a journalist at the publication that her ex-husband runs. He tries his best to stop her from leaving (and meeting her fiance) by tempting her with a story about a criminal (who may be innocent!) who is scheduled to be executed. Witty, funny, fast talking, and everyone is dressed so snazzy. A screwball comedy at it’s finest.

2) 10 Things I Hate About You

Image result for 10 things i hate about you

Two of the films on this list also fall heavily in the Young Adult genre. This is my favourite movie of the 2000’s. It is probably also somewhat iconic, with the whole Heath Ledger singing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”. If you don’t know the movie, the plot is loosely based off Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. It’s a very twisted and complicated love triangle/square/pentagon thing. But it’s amazing, and very 2000’s. The cast also has heaps of well-known actors. Besides Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also star in this.

3) Clueless

Image result for clueless

Another of my favourite YA/rom-com films of all time. Clueless is the perfect 90’s Valley girl film. It’s loosely based off the Jane Austen novel, “Emma”. It stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher, a typical privileged high school girl who spends all her time trying to match other people together, but her own love life isn’t stellar. Besides the dialogue being iconic (so much “Whatever”s and “As If!”), their outfits (see above) are just incredible. I’ve literally lost count of how many times I’ve seen this.

4) (500) Days of Summer

Image result for 500 days of summer

This is probably more of an ‘anti’ rom-com, as it just subverts expectations. I will also say that as a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, I was going to like this film either way. But the awesome soundtrack, clever plot, and the lead actors (particularly Gordon-Levitt) are just amazing, had me sold. The plot basically is, Summer doesn’t believe in true love, and Tom falls head over heels for her. The story jumps around in the timeline over the 500 days that their relationship begins, and ultimately ends.

5) Amelie

Image result for amelie

Whimsical is the word that always jumps out when describing the film, and well…it is! I first watched this back in high school when I was learning French, and I loved it. It tells the story of Amelie, a shy and withdrawn young woman who tries to better the lives of those around her. The movie is just sweet and charming, and never fails to put me in a good mood.

There you have it. Five of my favourite romantic comedy movies. They all fit in other genres pretty well too, but it’s impossible to slot movies into just one genre.

What’s your favourite romantic comedy? Have you seen any of the ones listed above?

Four months left in the year guys! What??

My Neighbour Totoro

I watched this just a few days ago, but I’ve been meaning to watch it for sooo long. Totoro wasn’t in it as much as I thought it would be, but he is so cute and weird. Also, catbus.

The Defenders

Okay, so this isn’t a movie, it’s a show, but I did enjoy it! I was a huge fan of Jessica Jones, so I was looking forward to this. The show wasn’t perfect, but it was a lot of fun. If you’re into the superhero genre, then this is worth a watch!

Bad at Love – Halsey

I’ve been listening to a lot of Halsey lately. This has been another favourite! I just love the hook, and I can almost sing along to the whole thing.

Pumpin Blood – NoNoNo

Another older song, which I recently found while going down a YouTube hole. It’s so peppy and the whistle part never gets out of my head now.

The Handmaid’s Tale

I have been recommended to read this book by a number of friends, both real and blogging. I got sucked into the story, and it was definitely harrowing at times. I recommend the series as well, but I did enjoy the book just a little more.

Moon Hunters

This is a co-op game that Rory and I have played a few times. It’s a myth based action game. Basically, following along the story, you guys work together to clear your chosen area before the third night when you have to fight the leader of the Sun Cult. The graphics are gorgeous, and at the end you get a constellation named after you depending on how you played. I once got to be a “Spider” where I had a whole army of spies, and the other time I was a “Throne”, where I got to confident and arrogant so I got turned into a chair.

Something New

Thanks to Anni (and Zoella), I found out about an app called 1 Second Everyday. Basically, you film for a second everyday. Then you can compile them all together. Anni shared a video where Zoella used the app for a whole year. It’s really cool to see it all together. My life isn’t as exciting as a YouTuber, but I have been having so much fun filming everyday. I’ve compiled it recently as I started it early this month, and for each second, I remember where I was and what was happening when I filmed it. Makes me realize again how fast time goes by!

What are some of your favourites from this past month?

Recent Favourites with Lil

Hey guys! This is my first collab!

Lil (from Life with Liliana) suggested we both write a post about our recent favourites in the world of movies and tv shows! I decided to share a few things of what I’ve been watching and enjoying lately. None of them are new, they’re just what I’ve been watching recently.

So I’ve mentioned that I watched this recently and I still love it. I’ve watched it a few more times since, and it’s becoming one of my favourite action movies! It’s just so crazy, sleek and packed full of action.

The Incredibles

I have a thing for superhero movies as you guys know. We watched this again recently, as we started talking about sequels coming up (it’s actually how we wound up watching Kingsman as well).  Also, this is just a classic.

TV Shows

How I Met Your Mother

Lately as we’ve been wanting to have background noise while we cook dinner or just hang around. For this, we’ve gone to Netflix and often put on some classics. We’ve been rewatching from around Season 3 and are currently just starting season 6.

The Handmaid’s Tale

I’ve recently finished reading the book, and had heard lots of good things about the series. I binge watched it all over the weekend. I was hooked, I like that the series gives us more of a look into the other characters around June. It was really well made and I really recommend watching it.

So that’s my most recent favourite movies and television shows! Thanks again to Lil for asking me to do this collaboration post with her! It was a lot of fun, and I’d be down to do more collab posts in the future 😀

July Favourites

July Favourites

Another month gone! We’re now well into the second half of the year. Let’s talk about some favourites I’ve had over the past month.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

This month, I finally watched the original trilogy of Star Wars. I kept saying I would get around to it for ages, and this month, we sat down and watched each one. I liked A New Hope, but Empire Strikes Back was insanely good! All the iconic moments and lines are in this one, which confused me, as I was left wondering what was in the third movie (which isn’t that good compared to the first two in my opinion). I got really pulled into the story, and I was worried what would happen to the characters. Always a good sign when a movie can pull you in like that. If you haven’t seen the original Star Wars, make sure you watch this one at least!

Kingsman: The Secret Service

I kept meaning to watch this movie forever! But I kept forgetting, and then eventually we finally remembered and watched it last week. I had no expectations going into it, but it was so much fun! I can’t remember enjoying an action movie this much. This is based off a Mark Millar comic, which is in the same genre as Kick Ass and Sin City, so it’s graphic and violent at times. But in like a comic book way. Also watching Colin Firth fight and kill people (well) was just a good time. If you’ve seen this movie, then you guys will know what I mean. The church scene anyone? (If you’re not into violence, maybe don’t watch).

I’m pretty excited that a sequel is coming out soon.

Bad Liar – Selena Gomez

Damn it Selena, you and your catchy songs. From the first time I heard this, I could not get it out of my head. I still can’t. It’s definitely an ear worm, I blame that bass line. I can’t help but to sing (and dance) along with it every time it comes on.

Sweatpants – Childish Gambino

I recently got into Childish Gambino again. By that I mean, I wound up on Community clipson Youtube, and through related videos, I fell down a hole of Childish Gambino songs. I listened to 3005, Sober, Redbone and Sweatpants on repeat. I find myself listening to this one in particular over and over though, and I can’t pinpoint why. I just can’t skip it when it comes on. Also, this video is trippy.

I only read one book this month. After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

After reading a lot of non-fiction books lately, I just wanted some light reading. I found this through my Goodreads recommendation and thought it sounded interesting. Basically, it starts after the happy every after part. Which sounded different to the normal meet-cute books I like to read.

When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.

I liked it more than I thought I would. It was easy to read on and off for the past month. I hope to read at least two books next month though.

Image result for kindergarten game

I watched a few Let’s Players on YouTube play some of this. The art style was cute, so I looked into getting it myself. The fun thing about this game, is that while it looks cute and friendly, you die in pretty vicious ways, and the storyline has a dark sense of humour. I got stabbed in the head by the cute little blonde with pigtails at the bottom cause I couldn’t give her a dollar. I’m still making my way through this game, it’s pretty fun!

Something New

I couldn’t decided between the two biggest things that happened this month. Both ended up happening last weekend. I officially went self-hosted, and Rory and I are officially homeowners!

That’s it for this month! What’s some of your favourites from this month?

Day 21 – The Most Overrated Movie

2001: A Space Odyssey

I don’t really know where to start with this one. I have only watched it once for a university class, and I still can’t make heads or tails of it. This movie gets raved about a lot, and there were parts I did like about it, but I don’t think it really deserves the universal praise. I’m sure we all have a film that we don’t understand why everyone else likes it. This was just weird…and really long. Even when there’s dialogue, and the bit with HAL kicks in, I was still bored, and couldn’t pay attention. The film is meant to be a visual thing sure, but I don’t know, something about this movie just rubs me the wrong way.

Maybe it’s space baby.

Nightmare fuel?

Anyway, this is my pick for this prompt. It’s a highly rated movie, but I just don’t get it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What do you guys think of 2001: A Space Odyssey?

What’s a film that you think is overrated?

Also! Just a quick update, tomorrow (I’ll be starting the process tonight though) I’m moving to a self hosted site, so things will be changing! Hopefully I do it right, but who knows? Maybe I’ll mess it up, maybe it’ll go smoothly, maybe I’ll really mess up and be gone for a few days. Who knows?? We’ll all just have to wait and see!

Day 20 – A Favourite Actress

Again, I have a few!

Emma Watson

Image result for emma watson

Do I need to explain why she’s a favourite at this point? Emma is clever, outspoken, passionate, stylish, and an amazing role model. She has also been in numerous movies since Harry Potter, as well as getting involved in other projects like being a UN Goodwill Ambassador, setting up “Our Shared Shelf”, and so much more!

Amy Poehler

Image result for amy poehler

Another actress and general role models that I often talk about. Amy both acted and wrote a huge part of Parks and Recreation which is one of the best shows ever! She’s also so hilarious, witty, and such an inspiration! You guys know my favourite quote of hers, from her biography Yes Please: “Good for her, not for me”.

Anna Kendrick

Image result for anna kendrick

There’s just something about Anna. I’ve always liked her since Pitch Perfect. Then she showed up in a lot of other musicals (Into the Woods, The Last Five Years), and I liked her in those two. Also, she’s kinda weird in that ‘relatable’ way, but she doesn’t get on my nerves like Jennifer Lawrence does (I like her too, but lately not so much and I can’t pinpoint why).

There you have it! Three of my favourite actresses.

What do you guys think of these actresses?

Who are some of your favourite actresses?

Don’t forget to check out Hannah’s posts as well!

Day 19 – A Favourite Actor

Okay, so I don’t have just one favourite actors. I have many. So let’s just talk about them. Also, a lot of them will come from television shows more than movies, as I just watch more tv than movies.

Also, my favourite actors aren’t always based solely on acting skills or other talents. To me, if they’re also super nice and genuine, that immediately makes them more endearing.

Anyway, let’s get into it.

Chris Pratt

Image result for chris Pratt

You guys will primarily know him from Parks and Recreation and Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s very funny and charasmatic, even before he get super buff. He can french braid hair, he’s super genuine and nice, he’s always visiting children hospitals, how can you not love the guy? Plus, he’s a good actor on top of all this.

Donald Glover

Image result for donald glover

I primarily know him as Troy from Community. But he’s been in an endless amount of shows, both live action and animation. He’s been in a handful of films, and is set to star in a few upcoming ones like the Han Solo spin off (as Lando), and The Lion King live action remake (as Simba!!). He is also talented in the musical world as Childish Gambino. As far as anyone is concerned, he’s a triple threat. So besides all this talent already, he’s also insanely funny!

So anyway, here’s two songs from him. A classic one, and his latest one which threw me when I first heard it, but now I’m into it.

This got a bit off-topic.

Lin Manuel-Miranda

Image result for lin manuel miranda

Literal cutie pie and genius. You guys will know him off Hamilton, but I remember seeing him in House when he guest starred. He’s also guest starred in a few other shows like How I Met Your Mother. He’s also incredibly kind, aware of issues, and seems like such a fun person to be around.

John Oliver

Image result for john oliver

Another Community alum. He’s also appeared in a number of other shows and movies both in live action and animation. He is just so funny, and incredibly quick-witted. Have you guys seen Last Week Tonight? I can’t stop watching that show and that’s the only way I ever really know what’s going on in the US politically. As a comedian and political satirist, he strikes me as someone who won’t bullshit you, on top of being hysterical. He has a very self-effacing humour and often mocks himself as well as everyone else which is just fun.

So there you go. A number of favourite actors of mine who I like for a whole bunch of reasons. They are just talented, funny, and seem really nice, which is enough for me to brand them as favourites.

Who are some of your favourite actors?

Day 18 – A Movie That Disappointed You The Most

Suicide Squad

I really wanted to like this movie. The trailer looked fun, the aesthetic and costumes all looked great, and it starred some really good actors. But..it just fell flat. To me anyway.

Image result for suicide squad

It started off really good! We got to see backstories of each of the villains, and how they ended up in Belle Reve, which is a maximum security prison where all our superheros send the bad guys they defeat. But as the film went on, everything felt muddled. I felt confused as to  what they were meant to be doing, and why should we care about it? I also feel like they featured the Joker a lot in the trailer, when he was just a minor character in the film. He literally was in it for like only 10 minutes. As for Enchantress, I’m not really sure what to think of her. Sure she looked cool, but that was it. For me this movie had a lot of style, but not any substance. I mean yes, it’s a superhero movie, it doesn’t need to have a loot of meat to it, but this just left me bored..and confused.

However, it did have an amazing soundtrack!!

But overall, I came out of the movie feeling disappointed, the movie was kind of forgetful for me. I had to read the wiki of the plot to even remember what was happening.

What do you guys think of Suicide Squad?

What’s a movie that disappointed you guys?

Day 15 – Least Favourite Book Adaptation

This was the film that made me give up on the whole Divergent movie series. Which really annoyed me as Insurgent was my favourite book out of the series.

Image result for insurgent

I enjoyed reading Divergent, but Insurgent was by far my favourite. It ramped up the stakes, and I got completely lost and invested in the book. (I wasn’t a fan of the third book though). I was okay with the first Divergent film, and thought that Insurgent would be a fun watch. I was wrong. From  the first time I saw the trailer, I was just confused. What the hell is that box with all the tubes and such? The whole time I was watching this movie I’m sure I had a perplexed look on my face. They veered miles from the original source material, and I didn’t get lost in the world like I did reading the story.

I mean, this whole series still feels like a copy of the Hunger Games a little, but at least the books were enjoyable and engaging. Can’t say the same about the movie versions.

What’s your least favourite book adaptation?

Remember to check out Hannah as she does the challenge too!
