Flat Lay Inspirations

A while back, I recreated some selfies I found on Pinterest. As an endless source of inspiration, sometimes a picture sticks with you and you want to try recreate it, or put your own spin on it. One of the boards I am obsessed with adding to is Flat Lays. I love them so much, but I struggle with coming up ideas for them. This is where Pinterest comes in!

For this post, I will share the original pin, and also my take on it. This was seriously such a fun way to kill a few hours on a laidback afternoon!

Here are four flat lays, and my recreation of them.

Flat Lay #1

Original

Mine

makeup products

This one caught my eye, as I was really impressed that they used the actual product in it. It was splayed out so impressively, that I knew I had to try it. Although a small part of me was really unhappy about wasting a bit of makeup for flatlay purposes, I argued it would just be this one time. My take was a bit more colourful, but I have less neutral coloured tools and products, so I made do. It was definitely fun trying to arrange all the powders, creams and tools everywhere!

Flat Lay #2

Original

flatlay 2

Mine

makeup flatlay

Side by Side

A lot of flat lays I see have lots of extra themed details that I don’t have, so I can’t really recreate. Ones that just have products tend to catch my eye more because of this. I loved this flat lay, as it seemed like organized chaos. The best way to run things. So I looked the photo over a few times, before collecting lots of similar makeup items I had to try recreate it. We both have the Marc Jacobs mascara funnily enough!

Flat Lay #3

Original

flatlay 3

Mine

lifestyle flatlay

Side by Side

I don’t have a single slogan shirt. I really need to fix that. That aside, I said before I tend to veer away from flat lays with lots of details for decor, but at the same time I love them. When it comes to more lifestyle flat lays, the more details the better. This one had a running theme of photographs and living in the moment, so I did my own spin on it. Mine is definitely less refined, but I love how it came out all the same!

Flat Lay #4

Original

flatlay 4

Mine

flower flatlay

Side by Side

I wanted to end on one that was more minimal and simple. Plus, I had some fresh flowers around, so I had to include them somewhere! I didn’t have a small notebook with a cute message that included a love heart, but I did have this card. I really love this one, it’s sweet and simple.

Flat lays are seriously one of my favourite things to search up on Pinterest. The endless creativity and inspiration on there leads me down so many rabbit holes!

Have you created a flat lay recently?

Hello Summer!

Summer is officially here in New Zealand, or at least in Wellington. We’ve had a week of sunny weather, even getting as high as 26 degrees! For us, that’s almost unthinkable. Last year, our summer lasted a few days then it just forgot us, so I think the weather is making up for it now.

In celebration of summer, I went for a walk down Oriental Parade, a popular spot in summer, as it has a very pretty beach in the centre of town.

Around the waterfront, we have lots of Pohutukawa trees lining the streets and many paths. It looks especially lovely when they’re all in bloom in summer.

There’s lots of paths heading in different directions. Everything just looks really good in the sunshine.

I really enjoyed walking around. As did lots of others. The close I got to the beach, the more crowded it became. We’re having a hotter summer earlier this year than we have in a while. Everyone was taking advantage after work.

Wellingtonians are all soaking up the sunshine! Also, to the right of the photo, you may be able to spot a crocodile bike. After all this, I was getting too tired in the sun, so I stopped by one of my favourite cafes.

Summer is well and truly arrived down here and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

I hope you guys enjoyed going for a little walk with me down here in Wellington! 😀

Instagram in November

Come have a look at the top photos I’ve shared on Instagram this past month!

Bondi Beach. This was posted on November 7. Rory and I had a mini holiday to Sydney last year, and this was one of the most picturesque spots. Bondi Beach is one of the most iconic Sydney beaches. Golden sand, blue water, and amazing scenery. It definitely put me in the mood for summer.

Oneroa Beach. This was posted on November 11. Last month we went to Waiheke Island, another beautiful spot! This was one of the beaches we went to and it was lovely. It was already a busy spot full of tourists and locals alike. The weather was also on our side that day. I have had beaches on the mind lately.

Floral Centrepiece. This was posted on November 13. I realized I had never shared this one of my little jars that I had as centrepieces for my wedding. The mixture of delicate flowers with larger ones was such a cute choice, that I wanted to share it. I was really happy with the arrangements my florist came up with.

Lake in the Park. This was posted on November 15. On another little evening walk, I took lots of photos. We went to the nearby park which is really cute. One of my favourite spots is of the little lake where the ducks hang out.  I took many pictures there, but this was my favourite!

Engagement Photo. This was posted on November 24. I haven’t shared any engagement photos recently, but it dawned on me that it’s been around a year since they were taken! Time really does fly by!

I’ve had summer on my mind, and the photos I chose to share this month seem to reflect that! What have you been photographing this past month?

It was so much fun, and I loved getting to interpret each prompt. The challenge also led me to multiple photo excursions, where I would spend up to an hour just snapping away, and learning more about my new camera.

Now let’s get to all the photos. Get ready.

30 Day Photography Challenge – Days 26-30

We’ve reached the end of this photography challenge. Here’s the final five photos.

Day 26 – Close Up

close up

I have a lot of close up photos of food and objects. I’ve shared a few in this challenge already, so I wanted to try something else. I saw something on Pinterest where ‘photo-ception’ was happening. This is what came out of my experimentation. A close up of my face on my phone camera, and the rest of me holding said phone.

Day 27 – Celebration

celebration

The most recent celebration for me was my sister’s wedding, so obviously for this prompt, I was going to choose a photo from that event. I decided on the shot of the rings, cause then it’s clear what the celebration is about.

Day 28 – Flowers

flowers

Again from waiheke, but I can’t help it. The gardens were amazing, and I had to show off more of the lavender field. I took so many photos of the flowers, this was one of my favourites.

Day 29 – Black & White

black and white

If you’ve seen my latest baking post, then you may recognize these cookies. While messing around with photos for the post, I played with filters. I ended up not using this black and white one, but I really like it’s spooky effect. So at least I can show it in this challenge!

Day 30 – Self Portrait

self portrait

Another self portrait to round off this challenge. I couldn’t think of anything creative or different to do, so I took a regular camera selfie with my tripod. I took it in the sunroom, cause I like the background with the white brick. You may recognize it from my current profile picture.

So yeah, that’s all the photos from this challenge! I want to do an official wrap up post for this whole challenge in a few days. So you guys can see all the photos in one post! That being said, I have really enjoyed doing this, and I plan to do another one at a later time. If you guys have interest in photography, definitely give this challenge a go! You don’t need to post it, but just use the prompts for inspiration 🙂

30 Day Photography Challenge – Days 16-20

Here’s the next five photos in the photography challenge!

Day 16 – A Good Habit

good habit

This was taken a few days ago in Waiheke. I like to go for walks. Sure, it may be because it gives me a lot of photo opportunities, but it’s a form of exercise. It’s one I enjoy and often do. I would constitute this as a good habit.

Day 17 – Technology

technology

When my brain struggles for photo ideas, I keep going to flat lays. What can I say, they’re fun and aesthetically pleasing to look at. I gave this one a shot, incorporating technology I use on a daily basis. That’s my phone, iPod, laptop, and I would count a pen as a tool of technology as well. Just the old school kind!

Day 18 – Your Shoes

shoes

This prompt is pretty straightforward. I gotta take a photo of my shoes. So I grabbed all of them and lay them out. I was considering wearing a pair, and then taking a photo that way, but I was happier with this one.

Day 19 – Something You Want

something you want

So this could be a photo of many things. Food, makeup, other material things. Instead, I went with another Waiheke photo. I want to travel, to be on holiday with loved ones, experience different things and see new places. I wish I could do it full time, but alas I cannot.

Day 20 – In My Bag

in my bag

Another straightforward prompt. Also a post I did a while ago. However maybe I should do an updated one, cause I carry different things around now. This is my Moana Road blue satchel bag. I use it for work. On any given work day, this is what you’ll probably find in my bag. Book, pens, keys, water bottle, phone, wallet, ipod and then a few care products. Lip balm, concealer (for touch ups) and a hairbrush.

30 Day Photography Challenge – Days 6-10

Here are the next five pictures from the Photography Challenge I’m doing!

Day 6 – Obsession

obsession

I have obsessed over many things and activities in general, and blogging has helped me find more things to obsess about. So I had to include a photo with a lot of things. Some things I have obsessed over are photography, blogging, stationary, Harry Potter, wedding, makeup, travel, and many aesthetic things in general.

Day 7 – Changes to Come

changes to come

This one was hard for me, cause I had no idea what to do. Lots of things change, seasons, clouds, people, etc. Instead, I tried to make a simple photo. I put in an empty page from my notebook. This is the one that I’m using for doodles. I hope to fill it up with lots of random things soon.

Day 8 – Routine

routine

There were many options for this one too. I am a creature of habit, and I love my routines. I decided to stick with one of my favourite parts of any routine. A delicious breakfast, and my morning coffee.

Day 9 – Someone You Love

Someone I Love

If you weren’t expecting a picture of Rory, then you may be new to my blog. Fun fact, this was the first ever picture I took with my new camera 🙂

Day 10 – Childhood Memory

childhood memory

Again, I was trying to think of what to narrow it down to. I couldn’t do a childhood home or room, since we moved around a million times and I can’t go breaking into any of those old houses. A childhood toy? I think I gave most away. Then I looked at my shelf. Good old Harry Potter. So many memories of reading those books. Sitting in cars, at home, at school, while walking home from school (I used to read this while walking home and it wasn’t the best idea, I bumped into a lot of things). Harry Potter has a special place in my childhood, and now.

That’s it for days 6-10. I’ll post the next five on the 16th!

30 Day Photography Challenge – Days 1-5

So as you guys know, I have a brand new camera which I’ve been having so much fun testing out! I want to work on my photography skills, so I found a photography challenge on Pinterest which I’ve decided to try!

Here are the first five days of the challenge.

Day 1 – Self Portrait

DSC_0030

You may have seen this in  my latest OOTD post, but this is technically the first selfie or ‘self portrait’ I took with my camera!

Day 2 – What You Wore

what I wore

On a Monday morning to work, I wore my favourite overalls and striped shirt. It got a bit chilly, so I did throw on a blue cardi as well.

Day 3 – Clouds

clouds

There was a lot of picks for this one, clouds are just so much fun to look up at.

Day 4 – Something Green

green

Again, the river provides some great photo opportunities. I’m glad it’s so close to our new place!

Day 5 – After Dark

after dark

Seeing a bright full moon behind clouds just seemed like a good photo opportunity. Reminds me of something supernatural, or maybe I’ve been watching Buffy too much lately. Who knows? 😀

That’s it for Days 1-5. I’ll post the next five on the 11th!

A Spring OOTD

Welcome to another OOTD. Over the weekend, we had a decent bit of sunshine. Enough for me to decide I could pull out my favourite pair of denim shorts from deep in my dresser! I’ve declared this my first Spring outfit for  the season.

It wasn’t that warm yet, so I did wear a long sleeve top too. This is my new merino top I bought a few weeks back. I stuck to simple blue colours for my outfit, so I decided to accessorize a bit. For my shoes, I went with nude wedges, and then I grabbed my rose pink quartz necklace. I love this necklace! It’s so pretty, and very delicate. Then, I headed out to take some outfit photos with my new camera.

It took a while to figure out, since there’s a lot more buttons and dials to mess with, but I’m happy with how they came out!

I also feel like I’m slowly getting more comfortable taking these outfit photos. There were a lot less awkward photos in my roll this time round. Progress.

We also took to the river later that evening, it was cooler, so I changed into jeggings and my booties. With Rory’s help, I got a few photos in my outfit out in nature! It was a nice walk, as it was just before sunset, so everything looked nice. It also gave me another chance to play with my camera, which I’m all for.
