I did a little baking over the weekend, and I’m happy to say they came out good! I have tried making meringues before, but egg whites are a finnicky ingredient, and don’t usually like me. I used a recipe that had been tried a lot, and had lots of helpful tips. I didn’t double the recipe this time, and I wanted to try it as it called for chocolate chips which I still had lots of! You can find the original recipe here.

Let’s start baking!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Not too many ingredients this time round

First things first, get the egg whites. I have a weird technique, I make a small hole at the top, then slowly pour out the whites. Once most is out, I get the yolk out and set it aside in another bowl. It works for me, but there’s probably better techniques out there.

Tomorrow, you will be an omelette

Now you add the salt, cream of tartar and vanilla.

Now beat it! I use my handy little egg beater as it’s a lot faster. It takes ages to beat together egg whites otherwise.

Keep going till you get little peaks.

Now, gradually add the sugar, and keep mixing! The sugar made it hard to keep using the egg beater, so I switched to a whisk. Keep mixing until the batter makes peaks and they don’t fall down.

Looking creamy and delicious

Now fold in the chocolate chips.

Scoop them up in spoonfuls and place on the lined trays. I tried to make them look nice, but after a while I gave up.

Bake for about 20 minutes at 150 degrees. I kept checking on them, as you only want them lightly browned. I also swapped the trays after 10 minutes, as it gets hotter at the top of the oven and I wanted to keep them even.

Meringues! They made our little flat smell so good as they baked too. That’s a major bonus to me.

They all had crazy shapes, but again, they tasted so good. I love meringues, they melt in your mouth, and having the chocolate chips made it so much better! Let’s have a closer look at all the crazy shapes.

Delicious, spiky looking meringues!!

Have you guys ever tried making meringues before? How’d it go? I’d love to know!

  1. Yuuuum! These look delicious, Angela! I’ve never tried making meringues before, but these don’t look too hard. I especially like that there’s chocolate in ’em!

    1. Aww thanks Shanika!! I read a comment on the recipe that humidity can mess with the egg whites, so I made them in the evening and hardly any troubles! It’s definitely trial and error though 🙂
